UNDERSTANDING CANINE BODY LANGUAGE

DOG BITE PREVENTION

Concepts covered

  • "Be a Tree" if a strange dog approaches or any dog is threatening or frightening
  • What a safe dog looks like
  • What a dangerous dog looks like
  • How to interact safely with a dog
  • How to meet a dog safely
  • How dogs talk with their tails and other body language
  • How dogs warn in subtle ways that they want to be left alone
  • Understand what constitutes dangerous behavior around dogs
  • Don't talk to strangers even if they have a cute dog or have lost their dog

PUPPY SOCIAL HOUR (puppies less than 15 pounds)
One hour of socialization and play time with puppies (up to 16 weeks old) close to their own size, which is 15 pounds or less.

Parents stay with their puppies just like at the dog park except that this is inside a heated and cooled building and is being monitored by experienced dog trainers to ensure that each puppy has a safe and positive experience. The trainers will also discuss the canine interactions as they occur, so you will learn more about dog behavior and play styles.

Puppies must have at least one distemper/parvovirus vaccination and proof of vaccinations are required. Obviously, if your puppy is sick (coughing, experiencing diahrrea or lethargy) please DO NOT bring your puppy to a Social until healthy again!

DOG SOCIAL HOUR - LARGE DOGS

One hour of socialization and play time for Large dogs (60 - 100 lbs). The dogs will have access to the playground equipment and their dog buddies for a fun time for all.

Parents stay with their dogs just like at the dog park except that this is inside a heated and cooled building and is being monitored by experienced dog trainers to ensure that each dog has a safe and positive experience. The trainers will also discuss the canine interactions as they occur, so you will learn more about dog behavior and play styles.

Dogs must be up to date on vaccinations (titers accepted) and proof of vaccinations or titers are required. Obviously, if your dog is sick (coughing, experiencing diahrrea or lethargy) please DO NOT bring your dog to a Social until healthy again!

DOG SOCIAL HOUR - MEDIUM SIZED DOGS
One hour of socialization and play time for Medium sized dogs (30 - 60 lbs).

DOG SOCIAL HOUR - SMALL DOGS
One hour of socialization and play time for Small dogs (10 - 30 lbs). With all the dogs being small, it is less likely that we'll have to worry about predatory drift, where the small dog could trigger a larger dog into prey drive, thereby keeping all the dogs safe and well. The dogs will have access to the playground equipment and their dog buddies for a fun time for all.

Instructors

Kim Lutz
Kim is the owner of Kim's Canines, a dog trainer and behavior consultant who believes that, just like children, all dogs need to be educated. Kim also believes that "how" we educate matters - therefore at Kim's Canines we use positive reinforcement based protocols and are committed to the principle of LIMA (least intrusive, minimally aversive). As we all know, good communication is not one-sided, so we teach the "language of dogs" so you can understand some of their body language too. There are many "normal" dog behaviors that upset people due to misunderstanding - we believe in educating, thereby "normalizing" these normal/typical behaviors. Additionally, empowering the animal to be able to make some decisions about their own life and developing a close bond and relationship based on trust and mutual respect, are just a few of the concepts that Kim hopes her clients will take away from her classes.
